HHLA TK Estonia AS has invested in the purchase of two Konecranes battery-electric RTG cranes. The order was booked in the fourth quarter of 2025, with delivery scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026.
According to Konecranes, the 296 kWh battery system provides up to eight hours of autonomous operation, “which represents a significant step forward in the development of battery-electric RTG technology.” These six-wide, one-over-five units will be used for container handling at the Port of Muuga as part of HHLA TK Estonia’s broader investment in a more energy-efficient container yard. Thanks to power supplied through an integrated 25-meter busbar charging system, the cranes can operate entirely on battery power.

Konecranes stated that this is the first time it is supplying RTGs with battery capacity of this scale to Europe, designed to support full working shifts in Muuga. The terminal already operates a substantial Konecranes fleet, including two RTGs, three STS cranes, and one RMG crane, along with equipment from other manufacturers.
“Our experience with the existing Konecranes equipment in Muuga has been positive. The equipment is reliable, and we receive very good support. Replacing older RTGs with these first battery-electric Konecranes RTGs in Europe allows us to further modernize our yard while maintaining the operational stability of the entire fleet. The fact that the manufacturer’s engineering and production units are located in the same northern climate region is also beneficial when developing equipment for our operating conditions,” said Tanel Ringo, Technology and Infrastructure Manager at HHLA TK Estonia AS.
“Close cooperation with a partner located just across the Gulf of Finland enables us to quickly turn development initiatives into real operating conditions on site. This order demonstrates how battery technology is moving from being a mitigation solution to becoming a power source for full-scale operational use in container terminals. The delivery of our first 296 kWh battery-electric RTGs with busbar charging highlights our commitment to supporting customers with practical and scalable electrification solutions,” said Filip Reiter, Regional Sales Manager, Port Solutions EMEA, Konecranes.
